Arthropods – Introduction

For a good introduction to the State DLNR-DOFAW invertebrate program look here: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/ecosystems/hip/. The most recent enumeration of Hawaiian arthropods is a 2002 checklist (G. Nishida, editor): http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/pdf/tr22.pdf.

The 2002 Nishida table includes family and genus totals for non-native species. The terrestrial arthropod summary table below only includes native family and genera, as summarized from the 2015 DLNR SWAP. It also combines the endemic and indigenous species into a column that totals the number of native species.

A. Ziegler in his 2002 book Hawaiian Natural History, Ecology, and Evolution provides the following numbers for founder species (numbers represent estimated endemic species ancestors plus indigenous species): Insects – 350+84=434, spiders – 13+0=13, and snails – 21+8=29.
